REQUIREMENTS FOR THE EAST ASIAN STUDIES CERTIFICATE

CORE COURSES

HIST 284:   East Asian Civilization I  (3 credits)

HIST 285:   East Asian Civilization II (3 credits)

Six semester hours of introduction to one of the following East Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean)

  • CHIN 101:   Elementary Chinese I (6 credits)

  • JAPN 101:   Elementary Japanese I (6 credits)

  • BOTH:

    •  KORA 211 Introductory Readings for Speakers of Korean I (3 credits)    

    •  KORA 212 Introductory Readings for Speakers of Korean II (3 credits)

ELECTIVES

Students must complete at least twelve hours of electives selected from four formally approved courses on East Asia in at least two of the categories of courses listed in the current undergraduate curriculum.

  • Arts and Humanities

  • Art History

  • Comparative Literature

  • Geography

  • Government and Politics

  • History

  • Language, Linguistics, and Literature

  • Public Affairs

  • Sociology

  • Women's Studies

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1) Nine of the electives must be upper division (300-400 level) courses.

2) A maximum of three credit hours of special topics courses on East Asia will be allowed with the approval of the Director.

3) No more than nine credits from any one department may be applied toward the Certificate.

4) No more than nine credits applied to the student's major may also apply to the Certificate.

5) No more than nine credits of the courses applied toward the Certificate may be transferred from other institutions.

6) Students are asked to work with their advisers in ensuring that the electives maintain an interdivisional and interdisciplinary focus (at least three disciplines are recommended).
